Timber Options

The timber selected for your windows and doors influences their appearance, durability, stability, finish and cost. We work with several proven joinery timbers and can recommend the most suitable option for your project, location, desired appearance and budget.

Accoya

Accoya is a premium modified timber known for its exceptional stability and durability. It has very little movement compared with many conventional timbers, helping windows and doors continue to fit and operate reliably through changing weather conditions. It is an excellent choice for exposed exterior joinery and can be painted or finished to showcase the timber.

Western Red Cedar

Western Red Cedar is a naturally durable, lightweight timber with warm colouring and an attractive grain. It has a long history of use in timber windows and doors and is particularly well suited to stained, oiled or clear-finished joinery where the natural character of the wood is part of the design.

Yellow Cedar

Yellow Cedar, also known as Alaskan Yellow Cedar, is a strong, naturally durable and stable timber with a fine, even grain. Its pale colouring gives it a clean and refined appearance, while its strength makes it suitable for detailed, oversized and high-quality architectural joinery.

Rosewood

Rosewood is a dense premium hardwood with rich colour, distinctive grain and considerable visual character. It is well suited to feature doors, curved joinery and other bespoke work where the timber itself is intended to be a major part of the finished appearance. Availability and the exact Rosewood species should be confirmed for each project.

H3.2 Treated Pine – Clear

Clear H3.2 treated pine is a practical and cost-effective option for painted exterior window and door frames. It provides a clean, consistent surface with minimal visible knots, while the H3.2 treatment helps protect the timber in exterior above-ground conditions. At Cedarlite, H3.2 treated pine is used for frames only. We do not use it to manufacture opening window sashes or doors, where we specify other timbers better suited to those components.

H3.2 Treated Pine – Finger-Jointed

Finger-jointed H3.2 treated pine is manufactured by joining selected shorter lengths of timber to create straight and consistent components. It is designed for painted finishes, which conceal the finger joints and provide a smooth finished appearance. Cedarlite uses finger-jointed H3.2 treated pine for suitable window and door frames only. It is not used for opening window sashes or the doors themselves.

Iroko

Iroko is a strong, naturally durable hardwood with warm golden-brown tones that deepen over time. It performs well in demanding exterior applications and is particularly suitable for sills, entrance doors and exposed architectural joinery. It can be finished to retain and showcase its natural character.

Other Timber Species

These are our most commonly used timbers, but they are not the only options available. Cedarlite has access to a wide range of additional species and can source specialist timbers for particular architectural, heritage or performance requirements.
Timber availability, suitability and price can vary, so we recommend discussing the timber species early in the project. Our team can help select the most appropriate option based on the joinery design, location, exposure, desired finish and budget. As timber is a natural material, variations in colour and grain are expected and form part of the character of bespoke timber joinery.
