Bringing ambitious architectural door designs to life

Large doors, unusual dimensions and technically challenging designs require more than good looks on a drawing. The timber, weight, hardware, glazing and way the door moves all need to work together. This is where Cedarlite's depth of joinery experience becomes particularly valuable. Our team has the manufacturing capability and craftsmanship to take on highly individual architectural work, including oversized doors, pivot entrances, expansive glazed doors and unique designs created specifically for a building.
Where a project includes both doors and windows, we can manufacture the complete timber joinery package for consistency across profiles, detailing, timber and finish. We encourage architects and builders to involve us while the details are still being developed. It gives us the opportunity to work through the practicalities of manufacture while preserving the intent of the design.

Heritage doors recreated with respect for the original

The entrance door of an old villa or the beautifully detailed doors of a heritage building are features worth getting right. Our joiners can reproduce original panels, rails, mouldings, glazing bars and other decorative elements, creating new timber doors that belong naturally within the architecture rather than looking like modern replacements.
Cedarlite undertakes heritage work for homes as well as older and significant commercial buildings. We can match doors to existing joinery and incorporate appropriate modern glazing and hardware without unnecessarily changing their traditional appearance. If you have an original door you'd prefer to retain, talk to us about the project. Depending on its condition and requirements, refurbishment may also be an option.

From statement entrances to beautiful interior doors

Different parts of a building call for very different doors. Because ours are made to order, the design can be developed around the opening, architecture and way the space will be used.
Front & Entrance Doors
Make the entrance part of the architecture with a custom front door, from beautifully detailed traditional designs to substantial contemporary doors and impressive pivot entrances.
Exterior Doors
French, sliding and bifold timber doors can transform the connection between indoors and out, with configurations created around the opening, views and surrounding spaces.
Interior & Barn Doors
Carry the character of timber throughout the interior with doors designed specifically for each space. Custom barn doors are a particular Cedarlite specialty, including large feature doors that become part of the interior design.

The right timber for each door

We manufacture custom doors from a range of quality timbers, with the species selected to suit the design, location, finish and performance required. Talk to our team and we'll help you choose the right timber for your project.

Timber sourced with the future in mind

The timber we source is PEFC or FSC certified, providing assurance that it comes from responsibly managed forests. It's an important part of our approach to timber joinery. We want the material we use to be responsibly sourced as well as capable of producing beautiful doors that can remain part of a building for many years.

Glazing options for timber doors

Glazing can be incorporated into your timber doors in many different ways, from a small feature panel in an entrance door to large, almost full-height glazed openings. The right glass will depend on the door's design, size and location as well as the performance you need.
Options include:
  • High-performance double glazing
  • Low-E glass
  • Toughened and laminated safety glass
  • Obscure and privacy glass
  • Acoustic glass
  • Tinted glass
  • Decorative, leadlight or heritage-style glass
  • Double-glazed units with traditional or applied glazing bars
When selecting glass, we'll consider thermal performance, safety, privacy, external noise and exposure as part of the overall door design. This is particularly important for large glazed, sliding, bifold and pivot doors, where the glazing, timber and hardware all need to work together.

Thermawood glazing designed specifically for timber joinery

Thermawood is the glazing system Cedarlite uses for new glazed timber doors and for suitable existing doors being upgraded to double glazing. Unlike a conventional approach to glazing, Thermawood has been developed specifically for timber joinery. Its dry-glazing and drainage design helps moisture entering the glazing rebate drain away instead of remaining trapped around the insulated glass unit. That moisture management is particularly relevant to exterior doors exposed to wind-driven rain and changing weather.
Thermawood can be used with Low-E, toughened, laminated, privacy and acoustic glass, allowing the glazing specification to be tailored to the door and its location. It means we can retain everything we value about timber while incorporating today's double-glazing performance into traditional, heritage and contemporary door designs.

Hardware selected to suit your door

The right hardware is an important part of how a custom timber door looks, operates and performs over time. We select hardware according to the design, size, weight and use of each door, working with systems from Brio, Henderson and FritsJurgens as well as other leading suppliers.
Available solutions include:
  • Multipoint locking systems
  • Entrance handles and pull handles
  • Digital and keyless locking options
  • Heavy-duty hinges
  • Sliding and bifold door hardware
  • Flush bolts and coordinated locking for double doors
  • FritsJurgens pivot systems
  • Architectural and concealed hardware
  • A range of hardware finishes
For large entrance, pivot, sliding and bifold doors, hardware needs to be considered early in the design process. This allows the door to be designed and manufactured around the appropriate system, rather than trying to accommodate it once the design has already been finalised.

Open up the house, without inviting the insects in

If you're planning large doors that will spend plenty of time open, we can incorporate Centor retractable insect screens into suitable designs.
The screens retract discreetly when they're not required and are particularly useful with selected sliding, folding and other large openings. They need to coordinate with the sill, tracks, opening configuration and surrounding structure, so tell us at the design stage if you'd like screens included.

Frequently asked questions for Timber Doors

Please allow for design and manufacturing time rather than treating them as a finishing item. For architectural projects in particular, involving us early can also help keep the joinery aligned with your construction programme.

Yes. We can work from architectural drawings and detailed designs, including one-off doors that require unusual dimensions, shapes or construction.

Yes. Where doors form part of an existing timber joinery scheme, we can reproduce profiles, mouldings and other details to help the new joinery sit naturally alongside it.

Cedarlite concentrates on designing and manufacturing the joinery rather than installation. Your own builder can install your doors, or we can arrange a trusted builder to carry out the installation.

Exterior timber doors need ongoing maintenance to protect the timber and finish from weather exposure. The amount of maintenance required will depend on factors such as the chosen finish, location and how exposed the door is to sun and weather.
